Well, the short version of the story is that we found one specific model of car that: A) We can afford, B) meets our needs, and C) Is not a minivan. Let me clarify that I am not hating on the minivan. I think it is very practical and definitely makes sense for a family with a lot of kids. We might even find ourselves in a van one day. However, I'm not ready for today to be that day.
We were excited to find this car! It's a 2008 Ford Taurus X. It's a great station wagon/SUV/minivan combo. The issue is that Ford stopped making this car three years ago. That means it's not easy to find one in good condition with lower miles.

My "committed" (aka borderline obsessed) husband spent the better part of the last few weeks researching what you can get for what price, etc. He stumbled across this car in Pennsylvania right before getting assigned a trip at work that took him pretty close to where it was located. So what did he do? He rented a car, woke up at the crack of dawn, and drove to where he could see the car. And now, 12 hours later, we are on our way to owning it... after a slew of paperwork and some painful financial distributions it will be official. So, there you have it. The new member of our family. Very hopefully this is the vehicle that will keep our family safe through many Colorado winters. As a scared, southern driver - I'm stoked to finally have All Wheel Drive!
