The Story of Mac

Four years ago today we adopted our dog, Mac.  We don't know his actual birthday so we recognize July 7th as his birthday each year. His estimated age is now 6 years old!  He didn't get much of a "celebration" this year, but I thought I'd honor him by sharing his story on our blog.

It was early 2007.  A negligent dog owner put his 1 year-old dog in the back of his truck to take a trip through the mountains of Colorado.  At some point during that trip, the dog jumped or fell out of the truck.  He was badly hurt with scrapes and cuts on his chest and face.  The dog managed to hobble to a gas station where he was found rummaging for something to eat.  Fortunately, the person who found him knew about CAWS, an animal shelter in Delta, CO.  The dog was taken in and even adopted by a foster family for short-term care.  His wounds healed, but he was still skinny and somewhat afraid.

It was now summer of 2007 and we 6 hours away in Denver Blake and I were looking for a dog to adopt.  We were searching online and found the CAWS website.  We contacted them about a specific dog, but we were told that she had already been adopted.  However, they asked us what we were looking for and we told them we wanted a friendly, medium sized-dog who would be good with children.  They said they had just the dog for us!  A woman working at the shelter was bringing someone to the airport in Denver the next weekend, and she said she could bring the dog to our house for an afternoon.  She told us if we didn't want to keep him then she could pick him up on her way home.  She brought us that poor, abandoned dog and she never had to come back.  Mac was a part of our family after that day.  Even though he drives us a little crazy some days, we love him!  And we are so glad that he is fat and happy now instead of sad and alone.
